NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 will begin from April 9 with defending champions Mumbai Indians facing off against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener, announced the IPL governing council on Sunday.

A total of 56 league matches will be played, with 10 matches each with Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, and eight matches each in Ahmedabad and Delhi's Arun Jaitley stadium. Six teams will play three afternoon matches and two teams will play two afternoon matches during the season.

After hosting the tournament safely and successfully in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year with all safety measures in place, the BCCI said in a statement that " BCCI is confident of hosting the IPL at home with the health and safety of the players and all those involved being paramount."

The IPL will be played behind closed doors in India this year, with a call on allowing spectators to be made at a later stage of the tournament, "the statement added.

The tournament's schedule has been mapped so that each team travels only three times during the league stage, minimising commute time and risk.

The IPL extravaganza will return home after nearly two years, with Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata hosting the blockbuster event.

The Playoff matches and the final will be held on May 30 at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, which recently hosted the Day/Night Test between India and England.

Last year, due to an increase in Covid-19 cases in India, the tournament was moved out of the country and held in the UAE, marking the third time the IPL had been held outside of India, following 2009 and 2014.
