India's Kamalpreet Kaur enters Women's Discus Throw Final

TOKYO: Kamalpreet Kaur (25) India's Discus thrower made her entry to the finals of the ongoing Olympic games after finishing second here today.

In qualification B, Kamalpreet Kaur threw the discus 64m in her third and final attempt to become one of only two automatic qualifiers for the final round, the other being American Valarie Allman (66.42m).

Kamalpreet was the only second thrower to achieve the automatic qualification distance of 64.00m, following USA's Valarie Allman, who threw 66.42m on her first attempt.

Meanwhile, Kamalpreet Kaur's countryman and veteran athlete Seema Punia did not make the finals.

Kamalpreet threw her first attempt at 60.29 and improved by 63.97 on her second attempt in her first Olympics.

Her third attempt, however, secured her automatic qualification in Group B's 15-player field.

Earlier, Punia, who was in Group A, was the first to get going in the group.

No one from Group A received the automatic mark, as the qualification rules stated that the qualifying performance of 64.00 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) advance to the final.

Seema, who qualified for the Games at the last possible moment, began the qualification with a foul throw. Punia's second attempt resulted in a throw of 60.57m, putting her in third place for the time being.

The final will take place on August 2.
