Mamata Banerjee swears in as Bengal CM for third time; urges political parties to maintain peace

KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee has taken oath as chief minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive time and emerged as the crusader of All India Trinamool Congress with a groundbreaking victory yet again.

Mamata Banerjee called on West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at Raj Bhavan and resigned as chief minister, as it has been practiced before she administered the oath.

Trinamool Congress had claimed as many as 213 seats in this assembly polls, which was higher than the year 2016.

Post-poll violence took over the state right after TMC assured victory and reportedly as many as 10 Bharatiya Janata Party workers lost lives in the violence.

“For the last three months, the state was under the Election Commission and I did not have much say. There was a lot of inefficiency in the state system during this time. I will set up a new police system today itself and tackle the violence with the utmost firmness," said Mamata Banerjee after taking oath as chief minister.

My second priority is to tackle law and order in the state

She had also appealed to all the political parties to refrain from any sort of violence.

“I congratulate Mamata Ji on her third term. Our priority is that we must bring an end to this senseless violence that has affected society at large. I have every hope that the CM on an urgent basis will take all steps to restore rule of law,” said Governor Dhankar.

Banerjee also asserted that she is looking for a collective battle to fight in the 2024 Lok Sabha election too but before that she has to fight the battle with the COVID-19 surge in the state as her first priority as a CM.

“My second priority is to tackle law and order in the state,’ added Banerjee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated ‘Didi’ on the occasion of her oath-taking ceremony.
