The Meghalaya administration headed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have made yet another effort to strengthen the economy of the hill state by ushering in employment opportunities for the people by launching the 'Meghalaya Aroma Mission 2019'.
In a move meant to expedite the growth of the economy by providing employment as well as strengthen the position of farmers in the state, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants-CIMAP and the MBDA (Meghalaya Basin Development Authority) for collaborative work on medicinal and aromatic plants.
This partnership is expected to strengthen the livelihood condition of farmers and create employment opportunities in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that this should encourage people to take up such environmental-friendly professions. He said that the Meghalaya administration should create opportunities to ensure that the farmers get the additional income and they kind of importance that they deserve.
Sangma also laid stress on the fact people in the coal mining industry are now joining the farming business, which is a great sign for the coming times.
The MBDA (Meghalaya Basin Development Authority) was set up in April, 2012. It is headed by the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya. The MBDA has identified that natural resources and river basins provide ideal opportunities for providing multi-livelihoods to people in the rural areas. It is no secret that the poorer sections of the rural community have hardly had a stake in the village economy.
