Meghalaya is likely to get its own ropeway within two years. The ropeway is likely to come up in state capital Shillong. A cost of Rs. 84 crore has been earmakred for the project.

“Preliminary costing of the Shillong Ropeway is estimated at ₹84 Cr & we target to complete it within 18 months post the issue of work order. For Umiam Ropeway, formalities with land owners will be closed by Sept. 2020. Dept. to finish all formalities & ensure work starts soon,” wrote chief minister Conrad Sangma on Tweeter.

It may be mentioned that India’s longest ropeway over a river was launched on August 24 in Guwahati. The ropeway connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati was launched by Assam Health, Finance, Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Guwahati Development Department minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The ropeway is 1.8 kilometre long and the distance is covered in 8-9 minutes. One way fare cost Rs. 60, while both way fare is Rs. 100.

The ropeway is being operated from Kachari Ghat in Panbazar upto the Dol Govinda temple in North Guwahati. Overlooking the beautiful Brahmaputra river, the ropeway felicitates passengers to cross the river reducing the travel time by an impressive difference.

Tourism in Assam is expected to get a major boost through the ropeway project. The ropeway is a twin track, single haul, bi-cable double reversible jig back system with two cabins wach capacity of 32 passengers. The cost ofthe ropeway project is Rs 5608.20 lakhs.

The ropeway has been built as per State of Art technology following relevant Indian and International standards. The ropeway is a convenient and non-polluting means of transport, as well as a source of environmentally friendly tourism. It is ecologically sustainable as it run by electric power protecting the beauty of the area while simultaneously providing passengers with a comfortable and speedy means of transport.
