The Government of Meghalaya has undertaken a noble initiative to fill the hilly Northeastern state with even more greenery on World Environment Day, which will be celebrated worldwide on 5 June. The World Environment Day is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
In this campaign, 1.5 million trees are to be planted in Meghalaya (with the aim of one tree to be planted by each Meghalaya dweller), with the aim of creating a world record.
Meghalaya Chief Minister has taken an active interest in the campaign and has appealed to all citizens to add to the greenery of the state by planting trees via micro-blogging platform Twitter.
Taking to Twitter, the Meghalaya Chief Minister wrote: appeal to the citizens of Meghalaya to join the campaign and be part of our mission to plant 1.5 million trees this World Environment Day. Our journey to create a greener earth should continue beyond the celebration of World Environment Day."
In another Tweet, Sangma shared the importance of planting trees. "Trees are vital for our existence. They give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world's wildlife. Let us come together this World Environment Day and beyond to secure our future and make Meghalaya greener, cleaner and healthier", he tweeted.
Now, Sangma has welcomed many stakeholders who are now actively involved in this noble endeavor.
This campaign is expected to make the people of the hill state more aware about the necessity of clean and green neighborhoods and make them more responsible towards the environment.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) has been endowed to screen the web-based campaign for the online registration of residents to partake in the program.
