Meghalaya-based militant outfit, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council’s (HNLC), Finance Secretary Wankupar Marwein, also known as Bah Hep Trai Siej, has surrendered before the state Director General of Police, R Chandranathan.

Meghalaya Police took to Twitter to inform about the major development and posted, “Today, Shri Wankupar Marwein @ BahhepTraisiej, Finance Secretary of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), surrendered before the DGP Meghalaya, Shri R. Chandranathan, IPS, in Shillong. His surrender came as a major blow to the HNLC outfit particularly the Finance Wing.”
According to Meghalaya Police, Wangkupar’s exit from HNLC has come as a major blow to the militant outfit as it is in desperate need of reviving its strength and power in the state.
The surrendered finance secretary of HNLC hails from Mawlai, Shillong. He was first arrested in 1999 for his involvement in activities led by the HNLC. In year 2000, after getting bail, he rejoined the outfit and started residing in Bangladesh and later he was appointed as the finance secretary.

Wangkupar’s decision to surrender and the state Police department’s efforts have been lauded by the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. “Major news. Wonderful efforts by the @MeghalayaPolice yet again,” he wrote and shared the tweet.
