Meghalaya Invites Bangladesh to be a Part of the 'North East Food Show' in Shillong

Dhaka, November 7, 2019:

Calling upon Bangladesh to invest in the state of Meghalaya in the various sectors, Meghalaya Chief Minister has said that while Bangladesh has bilateral trade touching up to 10 billion dollars with India, Meghalaya only contributes 0.7% of the trade with the country.

Meghalaya has tied up with SIAL for the next five years to host a food show in the State with the first ‘North East Food Show’ to be held in Shillong from the 4^th -6^th of December this year, and the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has invited Bangladesh to be a part of it. Many countries will participate in the food show, which has been touted as the biggest one of its kind in the Northeast.

The Chief Minister said that he wants to give the entire industry, the sectors, the movement and trade, that are already taking place a better and formal structure, and facilitate wherever necessary.

"Our meeting with the Commissioners is a good start to take up the matter on this great proposal. This will be the easiest way to start and carry forward the relationship to make it better", Sangma added.

Sangma further added that after speaking with the Chairman of Pran, he was really glad to learn about their products and was really impressed to see the kind of enterprise and the vision he has, the work that he has done. "He led by example by showing us what happens if we stay committed to the work and the vision that we believe in", he said.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister encouraged his team and the team from Pran to explore the opportunities.

The Chief Minister said that Meghalaya has almost 1 billion metric tons of limestone deposits, and with 1 billion metric tons deposits, it is an area Meghalaya and Bangladesh can both benefit from.

Adding that Meghalaya has also decided to move forward in the textile industry, he stated that the state is also focusing on the potential of natural fiber including pineapple and banana and are working on muga silk.

"With Bangladesh’s knowledge and expertise in the textile and garment industry and with the kind of experience and market accessibility that it has, it can add great value to our mission in Meghalaya and it has the potential to benefit both Meghalaya and Bangladesh", he said.
