SHILLONG: Meghalaya government yesterday launched the online registration portal for migrant workers under the Meghalaya Identification Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act 2020.

The portal was launched by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in a function held at the NIC Conference Hall.

The Meghalaya Identification Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act 2020 aims at ensuring maintenance of public order and protection and safety of migrant workers in the state through identification and mandatory registration of all such workers in the state.

The platform allows migrant workers and those who hire migrant laborers/workers to register themselves.

If they do not adhere, they will be fined up to Rs. 5000.

Registration through the portal can be done from any part of the country or through a help desk with a payment of Rs 50.

Speaking at the occasion, Tynsong said that the state government now has the authority to issue labour licences following the passage of the Act 2020.

He said the launch of the online portal would make doing business easier, and he urged all stakeholders to use it so that a database of genuine migrant laborers/workers can be maintained in the state.

He emphasised that this move is essential for the State's development because outside labour is required to complete projects in various departments and that only those migrant workers/labourers who meet the Act's various requirements will be given a labour licence.
