Meghalaya: National Commission for ST voices against Citizenship Bill

 Shillong, May 16, 2019:

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 or any other bill which allows any outsiders to acquire the citizenship of India who comes to settle in the North East.

Addressing the media, chairperson of the Commission, Nand Kumar Sai on Wednesday said that the Citizenship Bill was against the interest of the people of the region. Sai mentioned that the Commission would oppose any bill which allows outsiders to settle in the North East as it would be harmful to the interest of the indigenous populace.

The Commission on its part will play an important role in ensuring that people of the region are not burdened with outsiders, he added.

Sai along with a team of the National Commission will meet Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and discuss several issues pertaining to the state. He further mentioned that the Commission would urge the central government to give more powers to the autonomous district councils in the state and also ensure that the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo languages are included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
