SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today attested that the state government is spending about Rs 2,000 crore annually on education (including grants, salaries and infrastructure projects).
Making an address during the unveiling of the statue of ‘Thomlin Suchiang’, founder of Sawlyngdoh Higher Secondary School, in Jaintia Hills to mark the school's golden anniversary, Sangma lamented the various "bottlenecks" in imparting quality education.
The Chief Minister said that although many schools are functioning without any proper infrastructure, the state government is moving forward with a positive approach to ensure that they are able to transform the education system.
Reiterating the government's resolve to overhaul the education scenario in the state, the chief minister added that there are legacy problems in the education system that are to be overcome.
However, we have prioritised the sector and have made an effort to slowly reverse the trend, Sangma said, adding that thrust has been put to upscale teaching and learning infrastructures.
Meghalaya had a literacy rate of 74.43 % when the 2011 census came out.
