SHILLONG: Last Tuesday, the office of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bombarded with thousands of postcards from school teachers of Meghalaya. The reason for this? The Meghalaya teachers were seeking his intervention in releasing their salaries under the Centre’s Samagra Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) Mission, which are pending for five months.

Apparently, the postcard campaign by the Meghalaya teachers was launched in protest against the alleged delay by the Centre to release the pending salaries of the teachers.

Meghalaya SSA School Association president Aristotle C Rymbai said that a total of 12,541 elementary teachers were recruited under the SSA in 2,907 lower primary and 2,232 upper primary schools.

Lahkmen Rymbui, the Education Minister of the State, has hoped that the pending salaries of SSA teachers would be released before the Christmas celebrations in Christian-majority Meghalaya.

According to reports, the Meghalaya government has contacted the central government in this regard.

Rymbui stated that the Centre’s delay in releasing funds has also affected other activities of the SSA programme in the state.

In 2018, the government launched the SSA programme which incorporated three schemes, namely, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and the Teacher Education.
