Meghalaya got its first hi-tech modern fish market when Fisheries Minister Comingone Ymbon inaugurated a modern fish market equipped with modern technology at Saiden village near Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district on Friday.
The fish market has 22 stalls equipped with modern facilities to preserve fish sourced from different places.
Funded jointly by the National Fisheries Development Board and the State Fisheries Department, the market has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.64 core. Its construction began in 2016.
Speaking on the occasion, Ymbon hoped the market will help the fish farmers of the district and the State alike.
He explained that Nongpoh was chosen for setting up the State’s first modern fish market as Ri-Bhoi district ranks number one in Meghalaya in fish production.
He added that the State government had also completed digging up 18,000 ponds out of a targeted 25,000 under the Aquaculture Mission in order to enable Meghalaya to become self-sufficient in fish output.
