Mizoram Celebrates 34th Statehood Day

Guwahati, February 20, 2020:

Mizoram along with Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday celebrated its 34th Statehood Day with great joy and prosperity.

During the celebrations, PS Sreedhara Pillai, governor of Mizoram hailed 1986 signed Mizo Peace Accord. He said that the accord was a “beacon of hope” for enduring peace in the region.

He further said that the signing of the accord was historic even. Mizoram was a union territory before it was declared as a state. It became the 23^rd Indian State in 1987 after the peace accord was signed with the Mizo National Front (MNF). Before that, it had a massive insurgency issue.

The governor further asked the people of the state along with the state government not to be relying on funds from the central government.

He added that Mizoram needs to tap certain sectors of the state which it is blessed with. Among the sectors, some are horticulture, tourism, handicrafts, and handloom. The youth can live with pride if these sectors are tapped.

He called upon the state government to work towards achieving a welfare state.

He further urged the NGOs and the churches in the state to take initiatives so that the state government can combat the issues of AIDS and cancer.

During the Statehood Day, all the institutes and government offices were closed as a public holiday was declared by the state.

Central leaders including Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Mizoram on its Statehood Day.
