AIZAWL: In a bid to boost the population growth in the state, Mizoram Sports Minister Robert Roawia Royte announced an incentive of Rs1 lakh to parents with the highest number of children in his constituency.
However, the sports minister didn't mention the maximum number.
Expressing concern over the infertility rate and decline in the growth rate of the Mizo population, the Minister said that it is a serious issue for small communities like Mizos to survive and as well as progress.

Reportedly, a certificate of appreciation along with a trophy will also be given to the parent.
The construction consultancy firm owned by the Minister's son will bear the cost of the incentive, reports stated.
The sports Minister further added that some churches and influential organizations like the Young Mizo Association are also advocating policies to boost population growth.
It is noteworthy that such a step has been taken by the Minister at a time when states are advocating to control the population growth.
According to the 2011 census, Mizoram recorded a population of 10.97 lakhs approximately with only 52 persons per square kilometer
