Mizoram home minister briefs on Assam-Mizoram border dispute

AIZAWL: Home Minister Pu Lalchamliana today held a press briefing in his office chamber, where he made a statement on the border issue between Mizoram and Assam.

The minister stated in his statement that boundary disputes between Mizoram and Assam have existed since the colonial era and are still being raised by elected bodies such as the district council, Union  Territory, and the state of Mizoram and its people, but that the issue has remained unresolved to this day.

He strongly condemned the tragic incident that occurred last week at Buarchep in the border area, in which the crops of some Mizo farmers were damaged by Assam police personnel.

The home minister also states that adequate compensation must be given by the government of Assam to the affected farmers and that the government of Mizoram would follow up this demand.

Moreover, the minister noted that additional Mizoram police units have been dispatched to the affected districts, which should help to alleviate public concern and restore normalcy.

He further informed that the chief minister will convene an all-party meeting on July 14, 2021 to discuss the border issue, which will also include representatives of NGOs and the joint-church body, MKHC.

Information and Public Relations Minister Pu Lalruatkima, School Education Minister Pu Lalchhandama Ralte, MLA of Serlui Constituency Pu Lalrinsanga Ralte, Home Secretary Pi Lalbiaksangi, and IGP Pu John Neihlaia were also present at the press briefing.
