Aizawl, August 24, 2019:

The Mizoram state government has sought for the Centre’s aid in order to curb its increasing drug menace.

Mizoram Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, on Friday, held a meeting to discuss the issue with the Union Ministers in New Delhi.

According to an official statement, Zoramthanga said that massive efforts should be made to tackle the rising drug abuse and smuggling in Mizoram, since it is located on the international border and near the 'Golden Triangle' (Thailand, Myanmar, Loas).

The Mizoram state government has planned to build a state-of the-art rehabilitation Centre for drug addicts. CM Zoramthanga met Union Tribal Affairs Minister, Arjun Munda and discussed the same.

He also appealed for support to set up the rehabilitation facility. The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues such as setting up of centre of excellence in sports, market for farmers, and construction of tribal hostels at Mizoram University and bamboo plantation, among others.

It is to be mentioned here that the growing drug menace is a major issue in Mizoram. The state government, NGOs and others, have been working hard to curb the menace.

Moreover, the drug problem is impacting the entire Northeastern region, and the youth of the region have been especially affected.
