AIZAWL: A recent video of a Mizoram traffic police personnel punishing perhaps a driver from Assam in Zarkawt, a main part of the capital city here, has gone viral among the netizens and raising questions upon the authorities of the tourism-oriented state's behaviour towards outsiders.
In the viral video, the traffic police personnel could be seen forcing a driver from Assam registered car to do push-ups as a punishment in the middle of the road for some unknown reasons, most likely to be for parking on the wrong side of the road, sources informed InsideNE.
"No matter what was the reason, but it was unauthorised. The traffic police have no right of their own to force anybody to do so even as punishment. It is humiliating for any human being," the source said talking to InsideNE.

The sources said this is not the first instance of such inhuman behavior of Mizoram authorities and police with people from outside the state. “People from outside Mizoram often have to face humiliation and inhuman torture in the hands of Mizoram authorities and police. They often tend to forget that the state is part of the Indian union, and thousands from the state live and work in different parts of the country,” one of the sources, a government official himself, told InsideNE.

Ironically, the traffic police personnel, who himself is a government official was violating the state government's COVID-19 protocol by not wearing a face mask at a public place while punishing the driver.
The video is assumed to be from yesterday or the day before yesterday. The Mizoram Police is yet to react on the same. Efforts to contact the police top brass failed as Sunday is a holiday in the Christian-dominated state.
