The state of Nagaland, which came into existence on 1 December 1963, is celebrating its 57th statehood day today.

After the independence of India in 1947, the area remained a part of the province of Assam. Nationalist activities arose amongst a section of the Nagas.
In July 1960, following discussion between Prime Minister Nehru and the leaders of the Naga People Convention (NPC), a 16-point agreement was arrived at whereby the Government of India recognised the formation of Nagaland as a full-fledged state within the Union of India.
Pema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal, took to Twitter, to wish the people of the state on the occasion. "My best wishes to the people of Nagaland on its 57th Statehood Day. May the land of Warriors and colourful culture rise to become the leading state in India in terms of development."

Indian President Tamnath Kovind said, "Greetings to the people of Nagaland on statehood day. Nagaland offers a unique blend of heritage, culture and natural beauty. My best wishes to all the people of this beautiful state for a bright, prosperous and peaceful future."
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wished the people of the state on the occasion. "Best wishes to my sisters and brothers of Nagaland on their Statehood Day. This state is known for its great culture. The people of Nagaland are compassionate and courageous", he wrote.
