BENGALURU: Three computer programmers from Nagaland has been arrested by the Bengaluru police in Bengaluru for allegedly hacked former Karnataka top cop Shankar Bidari's email ID and defraud Rs 25,000 from one of his friends on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Thia Samong (31), Seropa Sesai (27) and Esther Konyak aka Rubika (28).

All the suspects are from Nagaland's Mon district and belong to the Konyak tribe, but Rubika was already employed in a beauty salon in Bengaluru for the past few years.

The accused had operated more than 60 accounts in various banks and a large number of documents - rent agreements, Aadhar cards, and PAN cards were recovered from them, police said.

Besides hacking websites, they had also set up a fake human resources company to entice unemployed youth from the North East states.

According to report, the accused met two people - James and Peter - on social media platforms, Facebook, and carried out the phishing attack with their support. James and Peter are currently on the run, police added.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East Division) Sreenath Joshi, Rubika used to be the face of the scam, while Thia and Seropa used to collect documents such as Aadhar cards and PAN cards from gullible unemployed youth in Nagaland and other Northeast states, which were used to open bank accounts here, by portraying her as a jobs officer in high-profile companies.

The accused used to move money into various accounts after carrying out the assault. They hacked the email or social networking site IDs of well-known people and create false accounts on social media platforms, then request financial assistance from the personalities' friends. They assume their 'VIP friend' is in danger.

This network was found after former Karnataka DG and IGP Shankar Bidari was a victim of a phishing attack and filed a complaint about it last month.
