Two persons, including a government employee were killed as an uprooted tree fell on their vehicle near 7th mile area along National Highway-27 near Niathu Resort, in Dimapur yesterday.
Police sources said that the taxi, a Maruti Alto was hired by the individual and was proceeding towards capital city Kohima when the incident took place at around 5:00-5:30 pm on Friday.
The uprooted tree crushed the roof of the vehicle, claiming the lives of the passenger and the driver on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Kedichol, aged 47, of Kidima village and Ranjit, who was the driver of the taxi and a resident of Niuland, Dimapur.
The bodies were taken to District Hospital Dimapur by the police. Normal movement of traffic along the highway was affected for more than an hour, the source said.
It may be mentioned that the tree was suspected to have fallen after it was weakened by the ongoing four-lane road consturction works.
