DHEMAJI: Rinku Sarma, the accused in the brutal murder of Nandita Saikia in Assam's Dhemaji, was shot while fleeing police custody on Saturday night.
This was confirmed late Saturday night by Assam's special DGP, GP Singh.
According to GP Singh, the accused attempted to snatch a weapon from police officers in Assam's Dhemaji district and escape from custody.
The police opened fire in self-defense to prevent the accused from fleeing, Assam special DGP added.

"One Rinku Sarma, accused of killing Nandita Saikia of Moridhol College Dhemaji tried to snatch ">@DhemajiPolice team weapon this evening and escape custody. He was injured in police firing in self defence and to prevent escape.">@assampolice," GP Singh tweeted.
GP Singh is closely monitoring the investigation into the sensational and brutal murder case of Nandita Saikia.
Nandita who was a third-semester BA student of Moridhol College Dhemaji died after she was allegedly attacked with a machete by Rinku Sarma for rejecting his marriage proposal.
Nandita was a resident of Naba Kathbari village under Dhakuakhana sub-division of Lakhimpur district.
Meanwhile, the Assam government announced that the sensational Nandita Saikia murder case will be heard by a Fast-Track Court.
