The Sikkim State Commission for Women has condemned the recent cases of sexual harassment reported from various workplaces in the State and has now announced that the state will not tolerate any kind of sexual harassment or violence towards women.
In a recent press release, it was mentioned that "The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace( Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 is in place to prevent and address offenses of sexual harassment. The Act stipulates putting in place various delivery mechanisms like internal complaint committees and local complaint committees in the workplaces"
It also provides for employers to create awareness about sexual harassment among the employees. Victims/Persons having knowledge of sexual harassment are requested to come forward and report incidents of sexual harassment immediately and without fear.
When incidents of sexual harassment or abuse go unreported, perpetrators get encouraged and are likely to commit a serious offense. Such complaints can be now reported directly to the State Commission for Women.
The Women Commission assures that all such complaints will be actively pursued and necessary assistance shall be provided to the victim.
Recently, Sikkim witnessed yet another sexual harassment case. This time the case has been reported from Prison District in Namchi South Sikkim.
