NEW DELHI: The Haj Committee of India (HCI) has stated that no Muslim will be permitted to participate in the annual Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia unless they have received the two vaccine doses.

Following the latest instructions from the Saudi Arabian health ministry and the Indian consulate-general in Jeddah, HCI CEO Maqsood Ahmed Khan made the announcement late yesterday.

Accordingly, he urged those who had applied for the Haj 2021 to get the first dose of the vaccine immediately so that they could get the second dose before leaving.

However, Khan made it clear that the Saudi Arabian authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the status of the Haj pilgrimage, and that the entire process will be subject to their approval.

Outgoing flights will begin in mid-June if Indian pilgrims perform Haj-2021.

Haj pilgrimage was out of bounds for Islam faithful from India in 2020 because it fell during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in late July, and the country is now experiencing a second and much deadlier COVID wave this year.
