GUWAHATI: The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) has condoled the demise of its steering committee member P. Hopong Yimchunger who passed away due to age related ailments on January 15.

The 110-year-old contemporary of NSCN founder AZ Phizo was accorded state funeral at the NSCN headquarters at Hebron near Dimapur on Saturday.

In a condolence message steering committee convenor Ashiho Asoumai stated: “He was a person who defied his age and gave his everything for the Naga nation. Our Almighty God blessed him with many years serving the Naga political cause. With his patriotic spirit he lived for many years to inspire the younger generation with his revolutionary zeal and political commitment on the rights of the Naga people as a nation.”

Yimchunger was appointed as steering committee member in 2008.

“As a down to earth nationalist he served the Naga nation with his humility, but never giving up spirit. With his demise the Naga nation has lost a noble man of high standing who will have his name recorded in the history of Naga political movement and the Naga people will cherish his contribution towards the Naga political cause.

“The family of (L) Mr. P. Hopong and Yimchungru people should be proud of him with such an outstanding profile that he himself established for the God given Naga nation. Today, the NSCN joins his family and Yimchungrus as we pay our highest respect to Mr. Hopong. We pray that God uplift your spirits and comfort you as you bid goodbye to the great son of the soil. May God grant the spirit of Mr. Hopong a peaceful rest!” the condolence message added.
