MUMBAI: Padma Sachdev, the first modern woman poet of the Dogri language and the Padma Shri awardee passed away on Wednesday at Mumbai hospital.

Sachdev (81), who was born in the Purmandal district of Jammu in 1940 at the house of Sanskrit Scholar Prof Jai Dev Badu, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday evening after developing some complications.

She began writing poetry in the Jammu hills' sweet dialect and won the Sahitya Akademi in 1971 for her book of poetry, "Meri Kavita, Mere Geet."

She went on to win other honours, including the Padma Shri and the Saraswati Samman in 2015 for her autobiography "Boond Bawari," and the renowned Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2019.
