NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took the first dose of India's homegrown coronavirus vaccine developed by biotechnology firm Bharat Biotech and Indian Council of Medical Research, Covaxin at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi.
PM Modi applauded the doctors and scientists on how in such a quick time they have worked to strengthen the global fight against the novel coronavirus infection.
The prime minister also urged all those who are eligible to follow suit.

"Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19. I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!" PM Modi tweeted after taking the Covaxin shot.
In view of the increasing number of infectious virus strains and an increase in cases, India today started the vaccination programme to include people over 60 and those over 45 with co-morbidities across the country.
