LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party (SP) is taking a surge in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls leaving the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailing behind.
As counting was underway, SP supported candidates were taking lead in 747 Zilla panchayat wards whereas candidates backed by BJP were leading in as many as 666 seats.
BJP even had to bite the dust from its most prestigious Ayodhya seats, as panchayat results were quite unfavorable for the party from there even after all constituencies under Ayodhya are held by the BJP MLAs.

Uttar Pradesh to go to polls on March-April next year for assembly and panchayat election usually turn in favor of the incumbent government in the region.
Now looking at its deteriorating position, according to a report the ruling BJP is trying to reach out to more than 1000 independent candidates so they could wrest maximum posts of Zila panchayat chairpersons, which would be conducted via indirect election.
In Aligarh, independent candidates had shown an extraordinary performance by leaving both the BJP and SP behind by a margin of 12 seats.
Trends also indicated the Bahujan samaj party and Congress' progress as both party-backed candidates lead in 322 and 77 wards.
