The last rites of Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will be performed today afternoon. Till the last rites are performed, the Former President’s body will be laid at his official residence in New Delhi to allow people to pay their last homage.
According to the Defence Ministry, the wreath-laying ceremony will be held till 11 am. This will be followed by an hour’s time for the general public to pay homage to the late President at 10 Rajaji Marg. The Defence Ministry also stated that due to COVID-19 protocol, the mortal remains of Pranab Da will proceed in a hearse van. All protocols/guidelines in regard to COVID-19 preventive measures will be followed, according to the Ministry.
It may be mentioned that Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Hospital where he was admitted earlier this month and had undergone surgery for the removal of a clot in his brain. The 84 year old veteran politician was found to be coronavirus positive when he went to Army Hospital for another procedure. At the hospital, he underwent surgery for a blood clot in brain. Pranab Mukherjee’s health worsened later and had to be kept on ventilator support.

A seven-day state mourning has been announced by the government as a mark of respect to Former President of India Late Pranab Mukherjee. The government in a statement said, “As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days State Mourning will be observed throughout India from 31.08.2020 to 06.09.2020, both days inclusive.”
A report quoted the statement as adding that “during the period of state mourning the national flag will fly at half mast on all buildings throughout the country, wherever it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment”. The government also said that the date, time and venue of his state funeral will be declared later.
