PV Sindhu creates history by winning bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020

TOKYO: Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has become the first Indian woman in history to win individual medals in consecutive Olympics after nabbing the Women's single bronze.

India's #1 shuttler PV Sindhu won the bronze medal defeating HE Bing Jiao of China by 2-0 (21-13, 21- 15), winning India's second medal at the ongoing games.

In the last Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, the ace shuttler had settled for a silver medal after losing to Carolina Marin of Spain in the final.

Notably, both medal winners for the country are women (the other medallist is Manipur's Mirabai Chanu).

On Saturday, PV Sindhu was up against the world number one Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei in the semi-final match which she lost 18-21, 12-21 on Saturday.

PV Sindhu, currently ranked #7 in the world, is the recipient of the sports honour Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and India's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri. She was also honoured with Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, in January 2020.
