CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth fondly known as Thalaiva by his fans has been conferred with the prestigious 51 Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar declared today.
“Happy to announce #Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic I thank Jury @ashabhosle@SubhashGhai1@Mohanlal@Shankar_Live#BiswajeetChatterjee,” Javadekar tweeted.

Prmie minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and congratulate the actor. He wrote, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality...that’s Shri @rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him.”
Rajinikanth debuted in 1975 with K Balachander's Apoorva Ragangal and has worked in Kollywood for over 45 years.
Rajinikanth will be the 12th south Indian actor to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in film. The Directorate of Film Festivals, an agency founded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, presents it annually at the National Film Awards ceremony.
The Indian government bestows the honour for outstanding contributions to the development and growth of Indian cinema.

Rajinikanth was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016 by the Government of India.
Films like "Baashha", "Sivaji" and "Enthiran" are among his many hits. His fans refer to him as Thalaivar, which means "leader." Rajinikanth recently appeared in AR Murugadoss' Darbar and is looking forward to Annaatthe's release.
