GUWAHATI: The nation is today celebrating its 75th Independence Day of India, the country's most significant milestone with much pomp and fervour.

Independence Day commemorates India's independence from oppressive British rule, as well as the numerous sacrifices made by our freedom warriors.

It is a national holiday that is generally marked with the hoisting of the tricolour, parades, and cultural activities around the country.

On August 15, 1947, India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.

It is a tradition that the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi has continued, followed by a speech to the country.

The Indian Independence Movement was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and began during World War I.

India regained independence on August 15, 1947, after almost 200 years of British rule.

The Indian Independence Bill was tabled in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and it was approved in less than a fortnight.

It stipulated that British authority in India would cease on August 15, 1947. Following the partition of India and Pakistan, India became a free country.

Here are some rare facts about India, I-Day:

  • The Indian flag was approved on July 22, 1947, only a few days before India's independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947.
  • On August 7, 1906, the first Indian flag was hoisted at Calcutta's Parsi Bagan Square.

    It was made up of three horizontal green, yellow, and red stripes.

  • Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's song "Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata" was renamed "Jana Gana Mana" and chosen by the Constituent Assembly of India as the national anthem on January 24, 1950.
  • Pingali Venkayya, a freedom warrior, created the first form of India's present national flag in 1921.

    By law, the National Flag of India must be made of khadi, a form of hand-spun cotton or silk material popularised by Mahatma Gandhi.

  • The flag must be hoisted during the daytime, and no flag or other symbolic representation shall be placed above it, according to the flag code.
  • On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay was the first person to raise the Indian national flag atop Mount Everest.
  •  Along with India, five other countries --Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, and Liechtenstein commemorate their independence on August 15
