After the Moderna and Pfizer shots, Sputnik V, manufactured in India by Dr Reddy's, has the highest effectiveness (91.6 per cent). Dr Reddy's had applied for emergency use of the vaccine, which is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials in India, on February 19.

According to the sources, the vaccine must be approved by the DCGI after the Subject Expert Committee's (SEC) recommendation before it can be used to inoculate citizen.

The committee had asked Dr Reddy's to request data on how the shot stimulates the body's immune response against the coronavirus at its last meeting on April 1.

The panel also requested unblinded reports on all serious adverse events; “unblinded” refers to participants knowing if the shot they received was the vaccine or a placebo.

The vaccine is also being tested in the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Belarus.

According to sources, the dry form of the vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Centigrade.
