Imphal, September 4, 2019:

Five police personnel - one Sub Inspector, an Assistant Sub- Inspector and three police constables have been suspended in connection with the death of a suspected drug peddler.

District Magistrate of Churachandpur, Pawan Yadav has also issued CrPC 144 restricting the assembly of five or more people or carrying stick, sword, arms and other lethal weapons which may cause harm, in between 5 pm and 6 am within the Churachandpur town area beginning from Monday until further orders.

The suspected peddler, identified as Giniam Munluo (44), had reportedly committed suicide in a cowshed after the five police personnel tortured him in charge of dealing with contraband drugs.

Police, however, said that Giniam was arrested on August 30 and after interrogation, he was released from the custody the next day.

Meanwhile, one Assistant Sub Inspector, Thangzason of the Churachandpur police station was beaten up by unknown individuals while he was off duty. He sustained serious head injuries in the assault, the police said.

Giniam Munluo from S Vengnuam village of the Singngat Sub division of Churachandpur district was found hanging in a suspected position at a cowshed in Singngat Sub Division of Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Sunday. An enraged mob blocked the road and stormed the Singngat police station at around 8 am on Sunday.

The government has taken actions following the agitations carried out by the deceased relatives and there was negotiation to address the issue. Since then, 5 police personnel were suspended for further inquiry into it.

The suspended police personnel are Sub Inspector T Lalbaikmuan, Assistant Sub Inspector, H Mauanthianlal, T Doulalven, S James Ngaihte, and Pauchianmuan Ginlam.
