GANGTOK: As a unique gesture, doctors from Sikkim observed the National Doctors' Day by cheering for the athletes from the country who are all set to represent India in the Tokyo Olympics.
Lauding the gesture, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "This is indeed a unique gesture. Doctors from Sikkim are commemorating #DoctorsDay today by cheering for our Tokyo-bound Indian athletes. This is the spirit!".

National Doctor's Day is observed every year on July 1 in the memory of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. The day is dedicated to all the doctors and healthcare officials who have been rendering relentless service by risking their lives.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended an event at Raj Bhawan in the presence of Governor Ganga Prasad.
During the event, several doctors, nurses, para-medical staff, safaikarmacharis, police personnel were felicitated for their selfless service towards our fight against the pandemic.
"Due to the COVID protocols, it was not possible to invite all, but we have plans to honour all those individuals who served the state during the pandemic. Also, the District Collectors and the police personnel have been equally important in our fight and I fully appreciate their endeavours", said the Chief Minister.
