The state government of Sikkim declared 5th October as a state Holiday

The announcements was made by chief minister PS Golay during the release of a book, titled Atal Bhandari, to mark the second death anniversary of Bhandari.

The book was officially released by governor Ganga Prasad on 16th July 2019.

Lt. Nar Bahadur Bhandari who was the second Chief Minister from 1979-1994 was born on 5th October 1940 Malbasey Soreng, West Sikkim.

He graduated from Darjeeling Government College and he also worked as a teacher before he entered in the politics.

He was the founder of Sikkim Janata Parsishad political party which won the 1979 assembly election in and he became the Chief Minister of Sikkim.

The Sikkim Janata Parishad was dissolved in 1984 Assembly Election and formed the Sikkim Sangram Parishad.

Late N.B. Bhandari and his party won the majority seats in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.

Also became the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the second term.

In 1984 also the Sangram Parishad won the Assembly Election and he again became the Chief Minister for the third term.

Also in 1994, 1999, SSP contested the election but could not come victorious and from 2004 and 2009 Assembly Elections he was affiliated to the Indian National Congress Party.

In 2013 he reinstated as the President of Sangram Parishad. Late. Nar Bahadur Bhandari also remained as the Member of Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2004.

Nar Bahadur Bhandari died on 16 July 2017.

He also served as Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Sikkim Parliamentary Constituency for some period.

His efforts to include the Nepali language in 8th schedule of the Constitution of India is remembered and all his contribution towards the development of the state is know as the "architect of modern" Sikkim.
