Sikkim Youths Demand 'Azadi' from Citizenship Amendment Act

Gangtok, December 15, 2019:

Sikkim youths under the banner of the Sikkim Progressive Forum (SPF) on Saturday staged a procession to express their resentment for the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act.

Flanked by heavy security, the students moved through the streets of the capital city Gangtok raising slogans against the controversial legislation. The students chanted 'Azadi' slogans and demanded freedom from the Citizenship Amendment Act, that was recently passed by both Houses of the Parliament.

One of the Assamese protesters who was a part of the rally, said, "Our brothers are dying, we want justice. That is all".

It may be mentioned that the Bill which took the form of a law after being passed in both the Houses of the Parliament, has been widely condemned by the indigenous people of the Northeast region.

Protests against the Bill have raged on in various parts of the region, with some of the protests taking the form of a violent rebellion in Assam, where the resentment is its highest.

In Assam, clashes broke out between security personnel and the protesters, and as many as 5 protesters were killed.

Meanwhile, demands for the Act's withdrawal from Assam have spiked in recent days, with all the renowned personalities from the State taking part in the statewide movements against the controversial legislation.
