AIZAWL: At least three different COVID-19 strains were detected among 75 patients from Mizoram whose samples were randomly selected and sent for whole-genome sequencing, said a health official.
For whole-genome sequencing, the samples were sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) in Kalyani, West Bengal, state nodal officer and official spokesperson on COVID-19, Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma, said.
73 cases of India's highly transmissible Delta variant (B.1.617.2), and one case each of United Kingdom's Alpha (B.1.1.7) and Eta (B.1.525) strains were found among 100 samples, he added.
According to reports, 56 of the 73 Delta variant cases were recorded in Aizawl, followed by Lunglei (9), Kolasib (5), and Serchhip (3).
Both the Alpha and Eta variants were also reported in Aizawl.
The present conditions of the patients have yet to be determined.
According to Pachuau , the mortality rate among patients infected with the Delta variant is 0.1 per cent, 2 per cent for Alpha variant, and 2.7 per cent for the Eta strain, he said.
