In a shocking discovery, it has been revealed that as many as three security personnel serving in Kanchanpur district of Tripura are involved in the illicit trade of dealing drugs. They were arrested earlier today.
In a secret operation, Police on February 27 arrested three policemen and recovered a huge quantity of drugs (heroin stuffed in small containers) at Kanchanpur sub-division located under North Tripura district.
Police sources confirmed that one of the arrested persons, Dilip Chakma, is one of the personal security guards of Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Santana Chakma.
Speaking to Inside Northeast, SDPO Kanchanpur Bikramjit Shukla Das said, “We have arrested three persons—Sanjib Chakma, Narottam Chakma and Dilip Chakma from the forest nursery of Kanchanpur sub-division (Under North Tripura District). All of them have a police background. Narottam and Dilip are from Tripura police whereas Sanjib is from TSR (Tripura state Rifles)."
The police seized 145 small containers stuffed with heroin, some packets and Yaba tablets. The estimated market value of the consignment is expected to be worth several lakh rupees.
Upon being asked on their background and other specific details of the case, he said that all the accused will be forwarded to the court tomorrow after a thorough interrogation.
“They were arrested red-handed from the forest nursery which apparently indicated that they were stocking the items at the forest land to get it shipped somewhere. But, still they were being interrogated and we would forward them on court seeking police remand”, he said.
Sources in the police department further said that all of them hail from Kanchanpur sub-division and two of them were on leave.
“Dilip Kumar Chakma, the personal guard of Minister Santana Chakma, was on leave today. The TSR Rifleman Sanjib was also absent from the battalion. As far as Narottam was concerned, the police was trying to collect details whether he was absent or on-duty” a source in the police department said.
