Tripura's deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Devvarma recently inaugurated a very special shop. This special shop, located in capital city Tripura, will sell bakery products made by inmates of the Central jail in Tripura. The shop-cum-bakery will also sell handicraft products.
This unique bakery project has been launched to help convicts learn new trades and coming back to mainstream life as changed men and women.
The novel shop is a pilot project of the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission. The Police Department of Tripura has also installed a snooker table in this shop to woo the young people of the State. The establishment has been christened as the 'City Centre Bakery Joint' and will serve 20 food items and 3 beverages, all within the price range of Rs. 40.
Authorities have said that all the food items manufactured at the jail go through a rigorous quality control check, making sure there is no risk of food contamination.
The bakery joint is managed by two Self Help Groups. Ms Anuradha and Khairunnissa Bibi, both SHG volunteers from villages, would source raw materials to the jail kitchen and sell the finished products.
It is to be mentioned that 30 percent of the profit will go to Self Help Group welfare which is expected to contribute towards society.
Speaking to Inside Northeast, Deputy Jishnu Devvarma says that he visited the jail two months back where he tasted some of the stuff sold there. "I have tasted some stuff there, it was very good, that is why we arranged for the shop to be opened with the help of some 'self help groups'.
