Tripura: IPFT wants their minister as ADC in-charge

In what seems to be a desperate move by the IPFT party in Tripura —the junior ally in the BJP-IPFT government to gain momentum in the politics surrounding the TTAADC, the party has proposed the name of tribal welfare minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia to be entrusted with job of managing the ADC affairs. Notably, Jamatia is the second in command of the IPFT party and holds the post of party's General Secretary.

“There is a provision [para 14(3)] under the 6th schedule of the Indian constitution in accordance of which, if the governor wants, he can ask a cabinet minister to shoulder the responsibility of ADC areas or can be made minister in-charge ADC. Since in other states—Mizoram, Meghalaya and Assam, the tribal welfare minister has been given the responsibility of ADC areas, we think this job responsibility should be given in the hands of IPFT General Secretary and incumbent Forest Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia”, said Mangal Debbarma, chief spokesperson of the party.

The party had also raised the demand for abolishing the existent zonal and sub-zonal development committees which had already completed its tenure with the left regime in the ADC Tripura. The party submitted a memorandum to the chief administrator of the TTAADC GK Rao taking the issue under his consideration.

“The Chief Executive Member of the ADC Tripura had constituted 5 zonal development committees and 33 sub-zonal development committees under the authority of rule 163D of Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council rules 1985. This committees were constituted incorporating MLAs, MDCs and BAC chairmans who were then in office”, he said.

He also alleged that those committees were formed following no prescribed guidelines and it was done in accordance to the “Pick and Chose” formulae. “All the committees were formed following pick and chose formulae and no prescribed guidelines were followed. Our party demands immediate dissolution of the committees and formation of new committees henceforth for swift and smooth functioning of the TTAADC administration”, Magal told media.

The Tripura party also came down heavily on the demands of other political parties branding their points “unconstitutional”. “There are several parties, NGOs and independent leaders who are demanding and proposing alternative ways of ruling the ADC areas in order to get hold of the situation in the hills. We condemn such unconstitutional moves and we think those who are backing such demands must don’t have any knowledge about the functioning of TTAADC areas”.
