Following weeks of legal and political pressure, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) MLA Dhananjoy Tripura has tied the knot with the girl he is accused of raping and deceiving.
The wedding, that took place on Sunday, is the fallout of hectic negotiations between the families of the MLA and the girl, who hails from Mandwai, at the intervention of some senior IPFT leaders.
The girl had filed a case against him on May 20 at the Agartala women's police station, accusing Dhananjoy of raping and deceiving her by not marrying her.
Police had booked the Mr. Tripura (29) under sections of 417 and 376 of IPC.
Last week, the Tripura high court had rejected Dhananjoy’s anticipatory bail plea and sought a report from police explaining why “marriage was not solemnised in a time-bound manner.”
Dhananjoy, however, maintained that he had been “framed” as part of a political conspiracy.
Dhananjoy, 28, represents the Raima Valley constituency in the Tripura assembly.
The victim girl said that she had known Dhananjay Tripura since the year 2010 when he was a student and had fallen in love with her. After a few months Dhananjay had proposed to marry her in due time and established physical relationship with her. The girl admitted to have been lured by Dhananjay’s proposal of marriage and continued the physical relationship.
But after Dhananjay had won the assembly election he had started disowning the victim girl going back on his earlier proposal for marriage even though the girl had stayed with him for four months and helped in the campaign.
