Agartala, January 19, 2020:

The Tripura government has renamed Baramura Hills in Kokborok language on ‘Kokborok Day’, thereby fulfilling the long-standing demand of Kokborok speaking people that prominent places of the state be renamed in the local language.

The state government, through an emergency cabinet decision, has renamed the Baramura Hills as “Hatai Kutul” to mark “Kokborok Day” held every year on January 19.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said that the sole purpose behind renaming Baramura hills is to show respect to the Kokborok speaking population of the state. He added that the location of the Hatai Kutul is such that people traveling to the state will be acquainted with the local language.

Deb took to Twitter and shared pictures from the event. He wrote, "Elated to take part in the 42nd Kokborok Day Celebration programme at Agartala along with other dignitaries. Addressed beloved people and took part in the rally. Happy Kokborok Day 2020!"

The Hatai Kutul is located along the National Highway 8 and is considered to be the lifeline of Tripura.
