Agartala, January 9, 2020:

Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Wednesday resolved to move to the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of the High Court regarding the ownership of Neermahal, the former royal palace built by Maharaja of Tripura Kingdom Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma.

Reacting to the Court’s verdict stating that the royal family have no ownership rights on Eastern India’s only water palace, Pradyot said, “I don’t know why the Court did not consider the points advanced by our counsel. But, the state government does not have a single legal document to prove their ownership of the palace.”

He claimed that the state government wrote to his father Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarman requesting him to transfer the property to the state government through a “gift deed”.

“My father is not with me right now. But he is the first person to write an objection letter. Manikya family is not weak, we shall challenge the verdict for sure” he added.

It may be mentioned that Neermahal palace is the largest of its kind in India and the only one in Eastern India. It is so huge, it cannot be fit into a single picture frame on the standard camera until you are at a distance of approximately 800 metres from the entrance.

There are only two water palaces in India, the other one being the Jal Mahal in Rajasthan. However, the latter is significantly smaller in size than Neermahal.
