A scuffle between 10,323 teachers and police personnel centering a deputation of the terminated teachers at the Education Department directorate sparked tension across the city on Tuesday. The face-off between the agitating teachers and the police left a number of police personnel and teachers sustaining minor injuries. A specific complaint was being lodged against the teachers, police said.

According to reports, a section of the 10,323 teachers under the banner—All Tripura Sarkari 10,323 ad-hoc pay Sikshak Karmachari Sangathan went to the education directorate in order to place a 4 point charter of demand without any prior notice. Due to no prior information, director school education UK Chakma refused to meet the teachers leading to massive protests by the gathered teachers. The teachers threatened the department officials of mass protests and attempted to gherao the office.

Soon after the development, police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to persuade the agitating teachers but in vain. The heated exchange of words between the police and the terminated teachers soon took a turn of physical confrontation. During the scuffle, a number of police personnel and teachers sustained minor injuries. Noticing the gravity of the situation, two teachers among the delegation were granted permission to meet the director, and accordingly, the demand draft was placed.

Speaking on the occasion, the leader of 10,323 teachers Bimal Saha pointed out serious lapses in implementation of the government announced one-time monetary assistance as some of the DDOs were putting forth some conditions prior to disbursement of the proposed sum. “By the prior announcement of our honorable CM & EM, the government had decided to give us a remuneration of 35,000 for epidemic lockdown situation of COVID 19 as early as possible for have some relief of our family members. Now you, please clarify why some IS, DDO and DEOs are applying some condition to the teachers of 10,323 to disburse the amount”, the demand draft reads. The teachers’ body also sought clarification on the IA petition and termination order issues through their demand draft.

Reacting on the issue, SDPO Sadar in-charge Anirban Das said, “We will take definite action against the teachers. We are registering a separate case against them”. Sources in the police department also said that the unnecessary gathering created by the teachers violated the lockdown norms and social distancing protocols imposed to prevent the spread of COVID 19.
