Shillong, October 19, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party (NPP) President Conrad K Sangma has declared that the upcoming bye-polls in the State shall serve as a tribute to the departed former Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly, Dr. Donkupar Roy.

The NPP has put its support behind the UDP candidate Balajeid Synrem, and the electioneering has seen the Chief Minister, along with other members of the party, campaigning for the consensus candidate in various places across the Shella Assembly Constituency.

The election campaign has made stops at Itchamati, Dalia village, among others, with the Chief Minister seeking support from the people out of love for Dr. Roy.

Earlier today, the Meghalaya Chief Minister, along with his entourage, also paid a visit to the grave of the former Speaker and UDP figurehead at Shella, where he was laid to rest in July.

"We're closer to the bye-elections for Shella Assembly Constituency. May we choose leaders as committed as Bah Don to take forward our vision for Meghalaya", Sangma stated, in a tweet.

In another tweet, Sangma said, "Have urged people of Shella constituency to come out in large number and cast their votes in favour of UDP candidate Balajied Synrem in this by-election. This election is a tribute to Late Dr Donkupar Roy and we should vote to express our love and solidarity to Dr Don."

It may be noted here that the bye-election for the Shella Assembly Constituency in East Khasi Hills District will be held on October 21.
