NEW DELHI: India Today Editor Rahul Kanwal has landed in the soup for seeming to hint that Nagaland is not a part of India.

Kanwal was hosting a session on fugitive Mehul Choksi’s extradition from Dominica with Rupin Sharma, Nagaland DGP, and author of the book ‘Extradition’ when Sharma briefly lost his connection.

After being reconnected to the live feed, Sharma apologised and said that there was a power cut and apologised. “Don’t worry, you are in Nagaland, electricity goes off even in India, please go on,” he said.

Netizens were quick to question Kanwal if he thought Nagaland was not a part of India.

Kanwal was discussing the repartition of Choksi from Dominica with Rupin Sharma, Nagaland DGP and author of the book ‘Extradition’ when Sharma briefly lost his connection.

To this, Kanwal said, “Don’t worry, you are in Nagaland, electricity goes off even in India, please go on,” he said.

Kanwal was immediately condemned and questioned if he thought Nagaland was not a part of India.

Abu Metha, the Nagaland chief minister's adviser, suggested teaching geography to the prominent journalist.

Kanwal later issued an apology on Twitter, terming the incident as a "slip of tongue."

"This was a slip of tongue. My apologies. Was meaning to say Delhi. My bad," he wrote.

Netizens, however, were not convinced.

">@rahulkanwal, I watch India Today on a daily basis. Every time I switch on the TV, I press 606 (Tata Sky). I look forward to watching your show everyday. 'Slip of tongue' is rather lame. Very very hurtful, coming from a prime time anchor," wrote user Imnaningkum Longkumer.

Bollywood producer Ronnie Lahiri, taking a jibe at Kanwal, said that he had almost applied for his 'Nagaland passport.

Kanwal's faux pas has been reported at a time when tensions in the Northeast are already running high in the region after a YouTuber's blatantly racist comments against Arunachalees.
