NEW DELHI: Amazon.com Inc on Tuesday announced that the company will take down listings of products such as briefs and doormats with Hindu sacred symbols, which were being sold on its overseas websites.

The multinational company took this decision following a massive backlash on social media platforms in India.

Recently, #BoycottAmazon was the top trend on Twitter in India.

“We are taking down the products in question,” Amazon informed. “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account.”

Several of the product listings on Amazon.com websites are controlled by sellers and not directly by the company.

In 2019, Amazon enraged the Indian customers after toilet paper seat covers and other items emblazoned with images of Hindu gods were spotted on its website.

A BJP spokesperson on Tuesday asked the people to register a cyber complaint or at the local police station “if religious feelings are hurt”.
