Automobile sales in India witnessed the steepest fall in overall vehicle sales in August since the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) started recording wholesale vehicle sales data in 1997-98.
This fall also includes passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, reported by industry body SIAM.
As per data released by SIAM, a fall of 23.55 per cent have been reported in vehicle sales across categories, including passenger vehicles (PVs) and two-wheelers and commercial vehicles (CVs) stood at 18,21,490 units in August. This is against 23,82,436 units in August 2018.

Moreover, in the month of July, the auto sales witnessed sharpest decline of 18.71 per cent to 18,25,148 units in nearly 19 years against 22,45,223 units in July 2018.
In August, domestic PV sales saw the worst-ever fall, i.e. 31.57 per cent to 1,96,524 units from 2,87,198 units in the year-ago period.
The wholesales had fallen to 30.98 per cent to 2,00,790 units in July this year, reporting to ne the worst decline.
Among the PV segment, Maruti Suzuki India posted 36.14 per cent decline in its August sales at 93,173 units, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) reported 16.58 per cent decrease at 38,205 units, and Mahindra & Mahindra reported a fall of 31.58 per cent at 13,504 units in during the month.
