After the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) employee unions threatening a day-long hunger strike Friday over delayed salaries during the festival season, its chairman has said that it is hopeful of paying salaries to its 1.76 lakh employees for September before Diwali.

Reportedly, BSNL chairman and MD P.K. Purwar have announced to give salaries to the employees before Diwali from its own resources that generate Rs 1,600 crore a month revenues from its services.
BSNL pays a per month salary payout of Rs 850 crore. Although it generates about Rs 1,600 crore per month as revenues, its major portion is required for operational expenses, statutory payments and is not enough to cover the wages
Reportedly, BSLN posted a net loss of 13,804 crores in FY19.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has suggested shutting down the ailing public sector undertakings Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). The ministry has also rejected the department of telecommunications’ (DoT) proposal to pump in a massive Rs 74,000 crore to revive the two PSUs.
